John Barnett, a partner at Burges Salmon, has been appointed as The Chartered Institute of Taxation’s (CIOT) new Vice-President.

The appointment was formally approved by the CIOT’s Council earlier this year, and John will take up his new role on 29 May at the Institute’s Annual General Meeting 2025.

The CIOT is the leading professional body in the UK dealing with all aspects of taxation. It promotes education in taxation and achieves a more efficient and less complex tax system for all.

John, who is a partner in Burges Salmon’s Tax and Private Client teams, provides tax advice to a wide range of high- and ultra-high-net-worth individuals and many leading international financial institutions. He has been a CIOT Council member since 2014 and currently chairs the Institute’s Technical Policy and Oversight Committee. He also sits on the Private Client (International) and Private Client (UK) committees.

In his new role as Vice-President, John brings a wealth of experience and expertise in tax policy and practice. His extensive background in private client tax matters and his active involvement in various tax-related committees and boards make him an ideal candidate to support the Institute’s mission and objectives

Commenting on his appointment, John says: “I am honoured to take on the role of Vice-President of CIOT. I look forward to working closely with my fellow officers and Council members to further the Institute’s important work.”
