That’s right, you don’t need to want to be a lawyer to embark on an apprenticeship at a Top UK Law firm! I have just started my degree apprenticeship as a Legal Technologist, sitting in the firm’s Innovation team and hybrid studying at the University of Exeter. The purpose of this blog is to give aspiring apprentices a flavour of the non-legal apprenticeships that Burges Salmon offer.

If you’re thinking about doing an apprenticeship over going to university and love the idea of working in the legal industry but don’t see yourself becoming a lawyer, don’t discount Burges Salmon! There are various Business Professional apprenticeships on offer that allow you to work in your preferred area, whether that’s Tech, Finance or something else! After all, a great law firm needs a great operations team to succeed, and it is exemplary to see Burges Salmon championing this.

Starting my role as an Apprentice Legal Technologist at Burges Salmon has been a whirlwind. Having re-located from rural West Wales, I was extremely nervous. Not only was I starting a new job and a degree, but I was also moving away from my hometown to a big city (a huge change from tractors and beaches!). This move was very daunting, especially as I hadn’t met any other apprentices that were also moving so far away from home.

However, from the day I was offered the role, Burges Salmon’s People Team have been incredibly supportive in helping me find accommodation and generally helping to make the transition smooth.

The onboarding process was meticulously organised, ensuring I felt welcomed and informed about the firm's culture, values, and expectations. The initial training was thorough, covering everything from firm policies to specific tools and technologies I'll be using in my role. The support from my team has been exceptional, with mentors and colleagues readily available to answer questions and offer guidance, no matter how small!

Looking ahead, I am most excited about the opportunity to delve deeper into specific projects that will challenge my skills and knowledge. I am particularly interested in exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence and legal services, and I am eager to contribute to initiatives that push the boundaries of what's possible in the legal industry. I look forward to growing within Burges Salmon and making a meaningful impact through innovation and technology.

For anyone considering an apprenticeship in the legal industry, Burges Salmon offers a dynamic and supportive environment to flourish, no matter your role.
