2023 was a busy year for HR professionals and in house employment lawyers as many employers continued to grapple with how to best support their employees through the cost-of-living challenge whilst facing challenging times themselves financially. This difficult background also saw an increasing number of trade unions, in both the public and private sectors, pushing hard for significant pay rises which has also created additional tensions for employers. Sickness absence, hybrid working patterns and increasing numbers of grievances have also featured on the ‘to do’ list for many in HR.
Against this background, changes to employment legislation were announced and, of course, the Employment Tribunals and higher courts have continued to be busy with several important case law decisions landing.
2024 is also shaping up to be a significant one for employers with a plethora of reforms in the pipeline – and the potential for radical change if a Labour government comes to power.
