Independent UK law firm Burges Salmon has advised Cardiff Parkway Developments on the proposed new business district and railway station in Cardiff East, which was granted planning permission by the Welsh Government last week. This is the first of six stations proposed by the South East Wales Transport Commission to receive the go-ahead.

The new scheme, Cardiff Parkway, will form part of a 90,000sqm business district that could support up to 6,000 jobs, and provide a sustainable transport hub that will promote active travel, and easy access to frequent rail services. Located equidistant between Cardiff and Newport, Cardiff Parkway will allow passengers to travel to the centres of Cardiff and Newport in seven minutes. The improved transport links will support local communities with access to more services and create new employment opportunities whilst reducing traffic and environmental impact.

Burges Salmon’s Built Environment sector group advised Cardiff Parkway Developments on the project providing planning, real estate and rail expertise. The team was led by partners Alex Minhinick and Philip Beer.

Alex Minhinick comments: “It has been a pleasure working with Cardiff Parkway Developments to secure its planning permission for a major new mainline railway station and business park. Our track record advising on large scale projects of this nature across the UK meant we could lay the robust foundations and mechanisms needed for the project whilst anticipating and resolving concerns throughout the process.”

Nigel Roberts, Chairman of Cardiff Parkway Developments, adds: “We are delighted that the First Minister has approved our planning application following an extremely thorough process. Cardiff Parkway will be a sustainable, well-connected business district with public transport and active travel at its heart. The scheme will now be able to bring opportunities to our local communities, the city region and the wider economy.

“We’d like to thank Burges Salmon for its support, the team’s understanding of the planning application system in Wales was second to none as was their experience in transport-led regeneration projects. We all benefited hugely from their expertise.”

Burges Salmon’s Built Environment sector group provides strategic and practical advice on developing, investing in, managing and occupying all forms of UK property on behalf of public sector, retailer, major landowner and institutional investor clients.
