Independent UK law firm Burges Salmon has been shortlisted for three awards at this year’s Legal Business Awards. The 25th annual awards celebrates the very best in the legal profession and is the most prestigious event in the legal calendar.
Burges Salmon has been nominated in the following three categories:
Corporate Team of the Year
Burges Salmon’s Corporate Finance team has been nominated in this category for its work advising Embark Group on its sale to Lloyds Banking Group. The team advised Embark on all legal aspects of the transaction, which saw Lloyds acquire Embark Group Limited and its subsidiary brands for a consideration of £390 million for the whole share capital of the Embark business. The sale, which presents an exciting opportunity for the Embark business to continue its rapid expansion, as a wholly owned subsidiary of Lloyds Banking Group, excluded the Rowanmoor SIPP and SSAS administration businesses, which were retained by Embark’s existing shareholders.
ESG Programme of the Year
Burges Salmon has been nominated in this category for its contributions as legal adviser to Bristol’s landmark City Leap project in 2021, a public-private venture to accelerate green energy investments and decarbonisation initiatives to help it achieve its carbon neutral objectives by 2030. Bristol City Council is one of the most ambitious UK local authorities in addressing climate change and sustainability.
The firm has been a primary contributor to BCC’s Climate ambition, recognised as principal advocate for key ESG initiatives, taking action, sharing insights and case studies, and in delivering legal services connected to the authority’s climate change ambitions.
Councillor Kye Dudd, Bristol City Council Cabinet member for Climate, Ecology, Waste and Energy comments: “Burges Salmon are a key partner for Bristol’s 2030 net zero ambition. They are leading the way in reducing their own carbon emissions, and also in stepping up to convene and support city wide initiatives that look beyond their own operations and across all of the Sustainable Development Goals. Burges Salmon are one of our city’s pioneering champions for ESG initiatives, taking action, sharing insights and case studies, and in delivering legal services connected to the authority’s energy infrastructure projects.”
Private Client Team of the Year
This category recognises the top private client teams in the country and Burges Salmon has been shortlisted due to having acted on some of the highest value and most complex succession and tax planning work in the UK and some of the world’s largest and most complex trust restructuring work.
Burges Salmon is also the only law firm to have contributed to the Wealth Tax Commission’s ground-breaking report; has presented a series of training sessions for the Institute for Family Business, including on corporate governance and succession planning; has launched a mobile App, which assists clients in working out whether they are resident in the UK for tax purposes; and has launched BScale, a free technology platform allowing entrepreneurs and founders of high-growth companies to create legal documents.
Roger Bull, Burges Salmon’s managing partner, says: “Providing outstanding advice and commitment to the client in both corporate and private client law, as well as contribution to promoting the environmental, social and governance agenda of the business, are all very high on the agenda for Burges Salmon. It’s terrific to have been shortlisted at the Legal Business Awards 2022 for our efforts in, and real commitment to, these areas.”
The Legal Business Awards 2022 take place at JW Marriot Grosvenor House London on 27 September 2022.
