Overview

Steven Hull is a partner in the firm’s Pensions and Lifetime Savings team.

Steven is a well-known, highly respected and popular pensions lawyer who has operated successfully in the London pensions market for over 35 years. Steven joins us from the pensions team of a leading national law firm, prior to which he headed up the pensions team at a long established silver circle city law firm. Steven graduated in Law from Liverpool University, joining a leading London law firm (then regarded as the premiere UK pensions practice) in 1987, becoming a partner in 1997. Steven has significant US pensions and benefits experience, having been seconded to the New York office of a large US firm from 1994 to 1996 and in 2000 establishing the UK pensions practice of a large US firm, which he led for over 5 years.

Steven is a full member of the Association of Pensions Lawyers, represents Burges Salmon as a Council member of the Society of Pensions Professionals, and is a member of the Pensions Management Institute. In addition to his legal qualifications, Steven is APMI qualified and holds the Association of Pension Trustees Certificate of Professional Trusteeship.

Steven’s practice base is broad, advising sponsoring employers and trustees on the full range of legal issues facing DB and DC schemes, ranging in size from under £50 million to over £6 billion.

Experience

Advising the GE Pension Plan on all legal aspects including a substantial plan split on a de-merger of the worldwide corporate group.

Advising Hewlett Packard on complex scheme funding negotiations and the pensions aspects of the sale of substantial division and transfer of pension liabilities

Advising DXC on a complex bulk transfer of surplus to fund the deficit of another group scheme and a wide range of related pensions issues

Advising the Smiths Group on a wide range of issues facing their two substantial defined benefit pension schemes, including scheme funding, pension increases, historic liability issues and scheme funding negotiations

Advising the Docklands Light Railway Pension Scheme on all legal aspects affecting the scheme, including scheme funding negotiations and benefit liability issues
