About

Tom heads our Estates and Land team and is very experienced in advising landowners, families and trustees on capital taxes, succession planning, Wills, trusts, heritage exemption and trading structures.

Before becoming a lawyer he was a land agent. He sits on the national taxation committee of the CLA and is a member of Professional Advisors to the International Art Market.

He is in Legal 500’s Hall of Fame and regularly speaks on tax and succession matters relevant to wealthy families

Experience

  • Trustees: Advising trustees on the momentous decision to appoint potential development land to adult beneficiaries.
  • Landed estate: Guiding family and executors through the probate process and the succession issues that resulted.
  • Heritage chattels: Advising a family on the Acceptance in Lieu procedure to settle IHT leading to a painting being accepted by a London museum.
  • Farming partnership: Agreeing terms and documenting a farming partnership as part of business succession planning.
  • Wills and trusts: Implementing a complex arrangement of Will and trusts for an elderly landowner including obtaining HMRC BPR clearance.
