Gregor Hayworth Director

Gregor is a dual-qualified dispute resolution solicitor. Gregor co-leads Burges Salmon’s Energy & Utilities Disputes practice, helping clients arrive at the right solution to their issue, minimising impact and maximising success. He is supported by our extensive dispute resolution practice with a proven track record in the highest-profile cases and with cross-border, multi-sector expertise.  

Gregor advises on major domestic and international energy, infrastructure and construction projects, both onshore and offshore, focusing on power (particularly renewables), oil & gas, petrochemical, transport, process plant, marine, insurance and defence. 

Gregor has a keen interest in risk advisory work, advising clients on dispute avoidance during the life-cycle of major projects.

Gregor has significant experience in the Scottish Courts, and in the High Court in England & Wales. He has also represented clients in arbitration, including ad hoc, ICC, LCIA and LMAA proceedings, and in adjudication and mediation.

Gregor also teaches at the University of Edinburgh Law School.

• Advising an international renewable energy developer in respect of a number of onshore windfarms following its BOP contractor entering into administration. 
• Acting for a major renewable energy joint venture developer in respect of multiple claims for additional cost and extensions of time brought by an international engineering contractor relating to the development of an offshore wind farm.
• Advising a renewable energy sub-contractor in negotiating and drafting contract variations with a major international renewable energy company in order to allow testing works to continue on a highly time-sensitive and market leading offshore wind turbine blade.
• Advising several developers in seeking injunctive proceedings and/or negotiating co-operation agreements with fishermen intending to impede offshore surveys or the commencement of construction works of offshore windfarms.
• Defending a developer from Force Majeure claims brought by a contractor in reliance on events connected with the Ukrainian war in relation to various battery storage sites.
• Advising an international engineering contractor in the defence of a subrogated construction insurance claim against a developer’s insurers in relation to defective work claims deriving from the installation of bespoke equipment at a hydroelectric power station.
• Acting for an international engineering contractor in defending defective design and workmanship claims relating to bespoke machinery installed at a polypropylene packaging plant.
• Advising a major international infrastructure contractor in successfully negotiating contract variations relating to extensions of time and additional cost claims as a result of COVID-19 in respect of the construction of an energy from waste power plant.
• Defending an international oil and gas company against an international engineering services company in respect of claims for non-payment of invoices and pursuing a counterclaim for damages in respect of defective design and construction of the topside of an offshore platform.
• Representing a group of international oil & gas companies against another international oil & gas company arising from a dispute in connection with the interpretation of the assignment provisions of a Joint Operating Agreement.
• Representing a defence contractor in a major ad hoc arbitration against its sub-contractor.
• Representing a local government authority in a final account dispute referred to adjudication involving complex geotechnical engineering issues relating to a bridge.
